Mission & Ministry

The people of Good Shepherd provide our "front line" ministry to the "least of these" to feed the hungry, heal the sick, and care for the widow and orphan. We take seriously the Gospel we are taught, that when we eat the Body of Christ and drink His Blood in the Eucharist, we become the Body of Christ for the world. We become what we eat. We minister to our Church Body, by the way we are involved in parish decisions as a congregation and by the way we support the ministries within our Parish walls, with our time, our talent, and our treasure. We minister to our community and our world both as we live out our personal callings to varieties of professions and services, and as we give resources to provide for those in need.

The Body serves our local community:
  • The Ecumenical Food Pantry is a Harrisburg agency which provides non perishable foods and supplies to hungry people. Our parish supplies both food goods and financial gifts on the first Sunday of every month.
  • The Frey Village Retirement Center liaison serves as a channel through which our parish can care for the residents.
  • Pastor's Discretionary Fund supports HELP, a city agency which provides food, medicines, heating fuel, etc., to families struggling to survive.
  • Community Day is a September happening which focuses entirely on providing resources and funds to those in need in our community. Sponsored by our Evangelism Committee, several entities are served annually. Recent recipients have included the American Red Cross, HELP, the Lawnton Fire Company, and the Paxtang Fire Company.
  • The Christmas Giving Tree is an event through which our parish provides Christmas gifts and dinners to mothers and children through city agencies.
  • The Blood Drive is an annual event that enables Good Shepherd donors to provide this critical service.
The Body serves our world:
  • Lutheran Disaster Relief
  • Lutheran World Federation Sunday
  • Synod and ELCA Church Wide Appeals
